Insert a graphic from Greenshot into Excel, it doesn't appear on other computers

Posted by Unknown Senin, 26 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
Introduction
I used Greenshot to capture a screen shot then I inserted it directly into an Excel workbook - everything looks fine. I saved the workbook as xlsx and e-mailed it to a colleague. The colleague opened it only to find the following:
The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed or damaged.

This usually would appear if you just link rather than inserting the image into the workbook. However, I had inserted it from Greenshot - I often use Greendshot to insert screen shots directly into Word without this trouble, what's going on?

Reason
After a little searching on the web I found this:

There is a bug in: Greenshot 1.1.5 Build 2643, this is the current version, at the time of writing, August 2013. Greenshot is not inserting but linking to the image. We have to wait until 1.1.6 build 2741 for the fix.

Workaround
Don't directly insert from Greenshot to Excel. Take your screen shot with Greenshot and first save, then insert the saved image file using Insert | Picture.

Swisscom TV and Internet suddenly stop working

Posted by Unknown Senin, 08 Juli 2013 0 komentar
Introduction
Today I came home from work and switched on Swisscom TV box and the TV - no signal! I tried the internet from my computer, I could connect to my wireless router but I could not 'see' the internet. The following is what I was getting when I tried to browse to any internet website:
"Your router still has no connection to the Internet."

I decided to login to my Router - this means I entered the IP address into my browser, typically it is http://192.168.1.1 but yours maybe different.
Enter the username admin
and your password (you should have this from when you first received your Swisscom Router).

The Router Configuration Overview screen (above) showed what I already knew, there was no connection between my Swisscom Router - the red X shows this! If you see this then of course you know the connection between your computer and the Router is fine, otherwise you'd not see this screen at all.

Solution (sometimes)
I checked the cables were all plugged in as usual. This is always an important first step.

Restart your Router. You can do this by switching off/on the Router using the physical switch. Or you can restart it by clicking the Diagnostic tab:

Click the Reboot Router button to restart the Router. This will take a few seconds, there is a count down, just be patient and let it finish.

If it works then on the Overview tab you'll see:

However, if you don't, if you still see that red X then...

Still not working, try the Swisscom hotline?
After resetting my Router three times and I had waited more than 15 minutes, I phoned the Swisscom hotline 0800 800 800. After sometime pressing numbers to get through to a human being, the technician told me to switch off/on my Router! I explained (again) that I had already done that several times without success. I suggested it must be a problem with internet line from connecting to my home. The Swisscom technician then suggested I reset the configuration of my Router back to factory defaults!!!
I said "no, why, it was working yesterday!"
Then a moment later, the TV came on! I told him, there you go, your line is back up again! The Swisscom technician tried to come up with some explanation, I thanked him and put the phone down. Really he didn't help, I should've been more patient. Obviously Swisscom had a problem with the connection to my Router and that must've just come back on eventually. Maybe they were doing some work on it? We'll never know!

Conclusion
If the problem is just with the TV, switch off/on your TV box. It might just work normally...

If not then check your cables, make sure everything is plugged in.

If you have a similar problem to mine, switch off/on your Swisscom Router. If it still doesn't work, wait a few minutes. I would recommend you have a cup of tea, a biscuit, then maybe it'll just start on its own.

Don't reset or change your Swisscom configuration if it was working before. It makes no sense to do that. If it was working yesterday then why should it not work today? It could be something outside of your control. Of course always double check your cables, switch off/on your Router again to be sure.

This has happened to me a three or four times now. Each time just waiting seems to have been the solution. It's a real pain because we all rely upon the internet and our TV so much these days. But phoning Swisscom doesn't seem to help. They are very quick to suggest drastic and illogical measures. Enjoy your tea and biscuits, be patient!

Uninstall Video Performer Manager

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 05 April 2013 0 komentar

Introduction
Video Performer (Manager) is dubious. It causes Java to give the error: 'Could not create the Java virtual machine' (see previous article for more details) and it might be doing other things - who knows? In my opinion it is best to remove this software from your computer.

Control Panel
You can attempt to uninstall Video Performer and Video Performer Manager from Control Panel.

After uninstalling, shut down, restart the computer. However, it is likely that Video Performer Manager is still running on your computer!

Process Explorer
To check and see if Video Performer Manager is still present on your computer, see if it is running in memory. You can use the Task List but a better alternative is Process Explorer, it is a free, small and light utility from Microsoft:

In the example above you'll see I found two dubious files, the obvious videomnger.exe and also ibsvc.exe which is also from the same company.

In Process Explorer right click on a process exe and you can see where the file is stored on your computer. In the above example the files were in these locations:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBUpdaterService
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Video Performer Manager

Ideally we should delete these exe files manually. This will stop them running.

Kill Process and Delete the EXE
Before deleting the exe files you must remove them from memory. Process Explorer has an option 'Kill Process'. Select the process exe you want to kill and press Shift-Delete (or right click and Kill Process Tree).

In my example I did this on ibsvc.exe and it worked, it disappeared from the Process Explorer view.
From Windows Explorer I deleted the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBUpdaterService and all it's files/folders. It worked! After restarting the computer ibvsc.exe had gone, when I looked in Process Explorer it was not there and it definitely was not on the C: drive any more.

However, when I tried the same procedure with videomngr.exe nothing happened. I could not kill the process and I could not delete the file.

File Assassin
If you can't kill a process or delete a file from the computer, try File Assassin, it is a free program from MalwareBytes.

Run File Assassin, click the [...] button and select the file you want to delete. For Video Performer Manager:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Video Performer Manager\videomngr.exe

Click  Use delete on Windows reboot functions (as shown in the screen shot above)

Click the Execute button

Also run File Assassin again, this time select the dll file by the same name:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Video Performer Manager\videomngr.dll

Click  Use delete on Windows reboot functions (as shown in the screen shot above)

Click the Execute button

Shut down and restart the computer (do not logoff).

When Windows finishes loading up again, check in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Video Performer Manager folder, the exe and dll files should be gone now. At this stage in Windows Explorer you can delete the Video Performer Manager folder without any problem, this will remove the remaining files.

Clean Up
If you had Video Performer Manager installed then maybe other nasties are lurking on your computer? Here's what to do:

Scan your computer with an anti-malware scanner - I recommend MalwareBytes. There's a free version that is very capable.

Clean your registry and remove old/temporary files - I recommned CCleaner. It's also free and excellent, you may even find that your computer runs a little faster after using it.

Conclusion
If you uninstall a program, restart your computer and double check to see if it's still installed or not. Some programs like Video Performer Manager are sneaky and will live in multiple places on your computer. You can use Process Explorer to check memory and to find where programs are stored. If you can't delete a file use File Assassin.

Utilities like File Assassin and Process Explorer are small and come in 'portable' version which means they are just exe files you can run from a USB flash drive. If you are working in a service desk or providing technical support of any kind, I really recommend you carry these with you at all times. They are very handy!

Dell Dimension 5000 black screen with blinking cursor

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 27 Maret 2013 0 komentar
I have an old Dell Dimension 5000 PC and I hadn't used it for a while. I'd had the Windows 8 preview (yes Windows 8 can run on a really old Pentium 4!!!) on it but now I was thinking to install something else. When I switched it on all I saw on the screen was a black screen and a white cursor blinking in the top left. No BIOS messages at all.

I opened it up and looked at the four memory slots. They are in pairs, two black and two cream. I had both filled, two original 512MB cards and two 1GB cards. I had a gut feeling the original 512MB cards were unhappy so I removed them. I switched on and hey presto my old Dell came to life!!!

Now my old PC is running with just 2GB of RAM and not 3GB but it doesn't matter. I'll be installing Crunchbang Linux or similar anyway.

Word 2010 printing is very slow

Posted by Unknown Senin, 18 Maret 2013 0 komentar
When printing from Word 2010 I found that it would say "connecting to printer" for ages... I was only printing one page of text!

Solution 1 (maybe)
On one website it said to turn off the background printing, I tried this but it didn't help me. Maybe it'll work for you, here's what to do:
Click File | Options | Advanced
Scroll down to the Print section
Turn off Print in Background (see the screen shot opposite)
Click OK

Solution 2
I downloaded the latest driver for my printer and installed it. I restarted my computer and now Word is printing normally again. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best!

Chrome requires Flash?

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 26 Februari 2013 0 komentar
Google Chrome has Adobe Flash Player included automatically. It updates automatically too, when Chrome is updated. However, today in Facebook I saw this Get Flash Player message!

Do not click Get Flash Player, instead follow the steps below:

  1. On the address line enter: chrome:plugins
  2. Click [+] Details (top right - see the example below)
  3. Look for Adobe Flash Player - click Enable

Back on Facebook it's working fine :-)

If you still don't see the video, press F5 to refresh the screen. You could also restart Chrome but normally you shouldn't have to do that.

Could not create the Java virtual machine

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 15 Februari 2013 0 komentar
Problem
When starting a Java application the message appears:
Java Virtual Machine Launcher
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

The solution for this issue varies. Here are some alternative solutions:

Solution 1
Nine out of ten times this can be fixed by reinstalling Java Runtime. I strongly recommend you look in Control Panel | Add and Remove Programs and remove (uninstall) all copies of Java Runtime you have. Then make sure you shut down, restart the computer.

Download Java Runtime from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Install Java Runtime.
All should be well...

Solution 2
I had one situation where even after reinstalling Java Runtime three times it did not make any difference, the 'Could not create the Java virtual machine' error just came up again and again.

I checked the computer for anything that looked strange and out of place. In Task Manager I saw a program called ibsvc.exe. It wasn't familiar to me, I did a search on the web and found this website description: http://greatis.com/blog/adware/ibsvc-exe.htm
It's part of software called InstallBrain from PerformerSoft --- it looks very dodgy, most likely spyware.

To remove it I killed the ibsvc.exe process in Task Manager and immediately deleted the ibsvc.exe from:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBUpdaterService

That didn't solve the problem, still Java didn't work. But then I found another PerformerSoft related file: srchalgomngr.exe
In Control Panel I saw something called 'Algo Application Manager' by PerformerSoft LLC. I uninstalled this program and restarted the computer.

When I tried Java, it worked!!!

NOTE:
I don't know for sure if these exe programs were stopping Java from running but it is very likely! Maybe on your computer you don't have these exe files but perhaps you have a similar problem? I recommend you look for any dodgy looking software, any spyware, any toolbars like Babylon or similar, remove them all! Run an anti-virus scanner on your C: drive, I recommend MalwareBytes. If you are experienced you will find Process Explorer useful.

UPDATE:
6th April 2013 - Please see the following article for more help:
http://mgxp.blogspot.ch/2013/04/uninstall-video-performer-manager_6.html

Solution 3
Make sure your Windows virtual memory is set correctly. I recommend you set it to 'System Managed Size'. You must shut down and restart the computer for the change to take effect. You can find out more details here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sysdm_advancd_perform_change_vmpagefile.mspx?mfr=true

Solution 4
You can add runtime parameters to the Java Runtime startup. This did not help me but it is worth a try.

In Control Panel double click Java (or run javacpl.cpl), click the Java tab and View. Enter -Xmx512M into the runtime parameter box. If that doesn't help, try -Xmx300M. This is explained in more detail here: http://www.duckware.com/pmvr/howtoincreaseappletmemory.html

Conclusion
I hope one of the above solutions helps you solve this problem. As I mentioned above, usually it's solved just by reinstalling Java Runtime. On one occasion it was some possible spyware that after removal Java worked normally again. You will have to investigate and try each of the above solutions. Good luck!

IBM Cognos 10: DPR-ERR-2107

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 31 Agustus 2012 0 komentar

Problem
When starting IBM Cognos 10, before the login prompt, the following error appears:
DPR-ERR-2107
The User Capabilities Cache cookie cannot be decoded.

Solution
With two Cognos systems that you run one after the other, this error can occur. Close your browser in between running separate Congos'.

For example, if you have a production Cognos and a development Cognos, you run the development edition, then you open a new tab and run the production edition - it will give you this error. Close the browser completely, reopen it and try again, it will be fine.

JVM Error 102

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 30 Juni 2012 0 komentar
Without doing anything special and without any warning, my Blackberry Bold 9000 showed a white screen (The White Screen of Death!!!) and the message:
JVM Error 102

There's an option to Reset but when you click that it doesn't help, it just resets the phone and you are back to the same place.

What to do? Of course do a search on the web and see if anyone had a solution!

There is of course, click this link for a step-by-step solution:

The instructions take you through using JL_Cmder to check the log for the (corrupt) file that is causing the error and then how to delete that file. The first time I followed these steps I still had JVM Error 102 but I followed the steps again (there was a second corrupt file) and it now works!!!

Problem
In Excel 2010, when you try to create a pivot table it give the following error message:
Data source reference is not vaild

Solution
Often this happens because you opened a CSV or other data file directly from another program.

Make sure you save your data file first, before you attempt to create a pivot table. It will work if it is a saved csv, xls, xlsx, etc.

Runtime Error when starting Photoshop Elements

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 06 Oktober 2011 0 komentar
Problem
I had installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC. It was working fine for a few hours and then when I started it, I clicked the Edit button to start the editor and it displayed the following error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files (x...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications' support team for more information.

Solution
  1. Browse to: C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Locale\en_us
  2. Rename: MediaDatabase.db3 to MediaDatabase.old
  3. Start Photoshop Elements, it should work now. Be patient the first time you start it though, it is a bit slow starting the first time.

NOTE:
If you can't see the folder C:\Program Data it is because by default Windows Explorer is set not to show hidden files/folders. To change this, in Windows Explorer click Organize | Folder and Search Options | View
Make sure Show hidden files, folders and drives is selected - see the screen shot opposite.

The server has detected an inconsistent database

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 28 November 2010 0 komentar
Using NetWare 6.5, in ConsoleOne, double click a user object and it shows the following error:
(Error -618) The server has detected an inconsistent database

Novell's support site has a page that might be helpful, click here.

If that advice doesn't help you (it didn't help me!) then restart the server! That solved it for me. After restarting the error didn't occur. But of course you should also ensure you run DSREPAIR until you get 0 (zero) errors.

Can't install Flash Player 10?

Posted by Unknown Senin, 09 Agustus 2010 0 komentar
Problem
When installing the latest Flash Player 10 for Internet Explorer did you get this error?
ActiveX control for Flash Player could not be registered

If you had the above error then try the following:
(these instructions have been tested on a Windows XP SP3 computer, I can't guarantee anything but it worked for me!)

Solution
To start with I recommend you uninstall the Flash Player you currently have installed. You can do this via the Control Panel or use the special utility Adobe have made:

uninstall_flash_player.exe
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

1.  Logon as Administrator or a Windows user that has Administrator permissions.
2.  Run uninstall_flash_player.exe (this will uninstall the current Flash Player)
3.  Shut down, restart the computer

The installation error: "ActiveX control for Flash Player could not be registered" typically appears if the registry permissions are not set to administrator. To do this you'll need a utility from Microsoft called SubInACL.exe and a file called reset_fp10.cmd from Adobe. Links to these files can be found under 'References' at the bottom of this article, or follow the instructions on the following Adobe knowledge base article: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/494/cpsid_49419.html

When you've followed the above instructions and you've run reset_fp10.cmd, did it fix it? I had a situation where it still didn't solve this problem! If you still have a problem, here's my solution:

Extended Solution
Click Start | Run
Type CMD  [Enter]
Type the following command lines:
CD\ [Enter]
CD "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"   [Enter]
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f  [Enter]

AutoIt Script
If you deploy solutions you may wish to create a 'fix' script. Here's some code to get you started with AutoIt:

RunWait(@ComSpec & " /c echo y|reset_fp10.cmd", @ScriptDir, @SW_MAXIMIZE)

RunWait(@ComSpec & " /c subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f", @ScriptDir, @SW_MAXIMIZE)

NetWare Error -631 when installing the NDS

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 03 Desember 2009 0 komentar
This was something I encountered with Novell NetWare 6.0 SP5e, so it's only interesting to a small group, but I thought I'd write about it as when I had the problem I didn't find anything on the web about it. Here goes:

Scenario
Two servers installed with NetWare 6.0 SP5e. Let's call them servers A and B.
Server A had the master replica (NDS/eDirectory).
Server B had a read/write replica.

I wanted to add a third server into the tree, to put a replica on it. This third server we'll call Server C.

On server C, I entered NWCONFIG, select Install Directory Services onto this server. After entering the tree and IP address of server A (where the Master replica is located) I received the following error:

An internal error has occurred. DSI cannot add a partition replica. Error description: unknown error -631 (fffffd89 hex) - (DSI-5.0032)

What I tried...
I tried all kinds of things, ensuring the time was correct on all the servers, running DSREPAIR (all servers showed zero errors). I checked the http://support.novell.com website and Google, but no, I couldn't find anything applicable to my situation.

My solution
My solution is probably more of a workaround if I'm honest. I didn't get to the bottom of this problem, but I got it to work - here's what I did:
I designated Server B as Master. From Server C I ran NWCONFIG, Install Directory Services onto this computer, I entered the IP address of Server B (now set as Master).
It worked!!! No -631 error!

In a nutshell, if you have -631, just try installing the NDS/eDirectory from another server.

Why?
I don't know. I ran DSREPAIR and had zero errors so I really don't understand why I couldn't install the NDS replica onto Server C from Server A. After the installation worked, I designated Server A as the Master again, it was and is still working fine. It's a mystery!
