Illustrator - move an object to another layer

Posted by Unknown Senin, 07 November 2011 0 komentar
In Adobe Illustrator CS5, if you accidentally created an object in the wrong layer, it is easy to move it:
  1. In the Layers window, find the object you want to move.
  2. Click the object in the Layers window so that a small coloured square appears.
  3. Position the pointer over the small coloured square, click and drag to the destination Layer.

OR

You may find this alternative easier:

  1. Select the object (or objects)
  2. In the Layers window, click to select the destination layer (where you want to move your object(s) to.
  3. Click Object | Arrange | Send To Current Layer

Illustrator - duplicate and reflect an object

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
In Adobe Illustrator CS5, there are often times when you need to copy an object and reflect it (as if its in a mirror). For example, if you are drawing a face then often you need it to have symmetrical features - you might draw one eye and want to duplicate it and flip it to make the second eye. The following steps will help you do this:

  1. Select the object (or select more than one object and click Ctrl-G to group them)
  2. Press O (the letter "o" for Oscar - or click the Reflect button from the toolbar)
  3. Carefully position (do NOT click!) the mouse pointer on the axis of where you want the reflection to be. For example, if you selected one eye, you'd position your pointer in the middle of the face, on or over the nose.
  4. Press Alt and keep it pressed, click the usual left mouse button
  5. The Reflect dialogue box will appear - click to enable the Preview
  6. Click Horizontal or Vertical, on the page you can see what happens, whether your image has been reflected in the direction you need or not.
  7. Click Copy (not OK) for your object(s) to be duplicated and reflected.

McAfee GetSusp malware submission tool

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 04 November 2011 0 komentar
Introduction
McAfee have a free tool called GetSusp, it is useful for those times when you feel you have a malware (virus, spyware, etc) infection but your anti-virus software hasn't detected anything. GetSusp is not a scanner/cleaner, it only checks for suspicious files and sends them to McAfee's labs for analysis.

Download
Click http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/getsusp.aspx
Click Download this tool now, it's about 1.4MB in size (as of November 2011)

Preferences
Double click GetSusp.exe
Click Preferences

Enter your E-mail address - this is for McAfee Labs to contact you with their analysis.

The Save Location is where the output file will be made and also the report file, if you create one. By default the Save Location is where the GetSusp.exe is located.

The Execution Mode should be Online because otherwise it will not use McAfee's online database to check whether files are known malware or not. As this tool is specifically for sending information on suspicious files to McAfee it makes sense to always run it in Online mode.

Click OK when you are finished.

Scan Now
Click Scan Now

It will take a few minutes to run, be patient. When it has finished you'll see something like the following:
GetSusp scan identified (39) Suspicious file(s) and (20) Unknown file(s).

Scan results are saved at C:\Temp\gsusp_110411_103342.zip.
Suspicious samples if any have been successfully delivered to McAfee Labs.

Click File | Save report to file - this makes a file called GetSusp.txt that lists the results. You could use this to help you identify suspect files yourself. Or just wait and McAfee Labs will contact you (as long as you entered your e-mail address as explained above.

Conclusion
I haven't used this tool extensively but already I feel this is a good move by McAfee. Previously you would have to manually decide on which files you thought were suspect, zip them and upload them to McAfee's support centre for analysis. That was ok but of course if you were not sure which files were infected, it might waste some time.

Of course McAfee have had Artemis technology in their products for some time now. Artemis is in their scanners and it checks via the internet for suspect files and can clean files immediately without waiting for full analysis. It's fast and excellent... but it does suffer from false-positives (it makes mistakes) when set to high scan level. Using the GetSusp tool looks like a better alternative if you are worried about a scanner accidentally deleting your files.

File Encryption

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 27 Oktober 2011 0 komentar
Introduction
Do you ever worry that someone might see your most important data, that they may learn your most intimate secrets? If you save your sacred files on a USB flash drive and lose it, maybe a stranger or even an enemy will get to discover those secrets! Maybe if you store files using a cloud based service such as Google Docs or Microsoft Skydrive, it worries you that these corporations can read your important work at their leisure?

There is a solution, you can use file encryption. Encryption scrambles a file so it is unreadable. You must use a password to unscramble (decrypt) the file so you may read the data as usual. There are many solutions and in this article I'll be explaining some of them.

What's your goal?
There are some different ways to encrypt files and different tools you can use. Which tool you use depends on what your ultimate goal is. Here are three common examples of common encryption scenarios:
  • Encrypt files on a USB flash drive
  • Encrypt some files stored on a network share
  • Encrypt files some files on my hard disk drive (C: drive)
  • Encrypt an entire local drive (C:, D:, etc)
  • Encrypt files for sending as e-mail attachments
The above are very common scenarios that we can break down into the following:
  1. Encrypt a drive
  2. Encrypt a file(s)
  3. Encrypt a file(s) for transport
I've numbered them in order of flexibility. Let's look at each one in turn:

1. Encrypt a drive
To encrypt a whole drive means that any file copied or saved to that computer will be encrypted 'on-the-fly' (automatically). This can be great, you don't need to think about encryption, you just use your computer normally and the files are secure. The down side is that if there's a problem, Windows crashes and can't start up properly for example, it might mean that you will be unable to recover any of your files. Another common problem is that because the computer is having to encrypt and decrypt files all the time, even system files, it may slow down. Of course encrypting a whole drive is not going to be appropriate if your goal is only to protect files you send by e-mail.

I would recommend you think long and hard about encrypting any drive before you do it. Make sure you have a good back up of your data at all times.

To encrypt a whole drive there are many tools, Windows 7 BitLocker can do this, TrueCrypt and others.

2. Encrypt a file(s)
A more flexible approach is to encrypt only the files you want to protect, not your entire drive. For example, with a program like TrueCrypt you can create a special file that acts like a container. It can appear as a virtual drive on your computer, in other words the container is represented by a drive letter. This can be handy, you can easily save files to it and as you do they are encrypted 'on the fly'. You could also create one of these 'container' files on a USB flash drive and when you copy files to it, they are encrypted.

The advantage of this method over encrypting the entire drive is that you could even copy that encrypted files somewhere else, onto another USB flash drive, to a DVD, to Google Docs, where ever. The disadvantage is that with programs like TrueCrypt, when you create an encrypted file, a 'container', you have to specify the size from the beginning no matter what is stored inside. For example, you may only have two megabytes of files but the container encrypted file maybe ten megabytes in size.

3.  Encrypt a file(s) for transport
If you want to sent a file or files as e-mail attachments but you want to protect them in case the e-mail is intercepted along the way, you may need to use a different kind of encryption method. In this scenario you need the most flexible solution because the person receiving the file may not have the same software as you, asking them to install something can be a pain.

The solution is to use a program such as WinZip or 7-Zip to make a compressed file and put a password on the file. For example, you can create a file called "important.zip" and add a file or files to it. Inside WinZip or 7-Zip use the Encrypt option to add a password. AES encryption is recommended - more about this later in the article.

One downside of this method is that files are not encrypted 'on the fly'. Every time you add a file you must add a password. Every time you want to extract a file you have to enter the password. You would need to manage many passwords. The file names are also visible even when encrypted. This may not be a big deal but in some cases you don't want that. The saving grace of this method is that it is the most flexible and ideal for securing files you are going to e-mailing.

Tools
Microsoft BitLocker. This is great, it allows you to encrypt your entire hard drive or USB flash drive. But it only comes with Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise editions.

TrueCrypt is a good alternative. It's open source, free, powerful yet relatively easy to use. For the techies out there, it can even be run from the command line. TrueCrypt can use many different encryption methods including the reliable AES encryption.

WinZip or 7-Zip - WinZip is shareware, it has a good interface but eventually you should buy it. 7-Zip is open source, free, it can open zip, rar and it's very own 7z format files. Both WinZip and 7-Zip can encrypt with AES encryption.

There are other programs like WinZip and 7-zip, like WinRAR for example. Most of these work in a similar way. I'm talking about WinZip and 7-zip here just as examples. If you prefer something else, that's fine.

Encryption Strength
When using WinZip and 7-Zip there's a standard zip encryption called "Zip 2.0 encryption". I do not recommend this.

Always use AES encryption. The higher the bit number the better. For example, AES 256-bit is stronger than 128-bit. What does 'stronger' mean? Well it means the higher the bit rate, the longer it would take for a hacker to discover your password. AES is very secure, it's used by the US government.

Conclusion
For anyone who wants to encrypt some files with the least bother, use WinZip, 7-zip or similar. It's also flexible enough to use anywhere and even to send as an e-mail attachment.

If you want something more sophisticated but free, try TrueCrypt. It has an option to encrypt an entire drive but I would recommend you start with only using the encryption 'file containers'. That's the most flexible option.

BitLocker is should be considered primarily by enterprises.

Trace the source of an e-mail

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 12 Oktober 2011 0 komentar
Gmail 'Show original' (15/11/12)
Have you ever received an e-mail and wondered if you could check where it really came from? You can find out using the header information from any e-mail you receive.

Most e-mail software have a way to show the header information, for example, in Gmail you can click the Show original option - see the example opposite.

Once you have the header text, copy it (select it and press Ctrl-C).

You can paste the header text into an e-mail tracing website - it will analyse the information for you. For example:
(last accessed 12/10/2011)

The above website and most e-mail tracing sites will even plot where the e-mail came from in Google Maps. It can be very interesting.

However, a word of warning, sophisticated spam e-mails may be able to fake the header text. Another problem is that the header may only show the ISP (Internet Service Provider) of the e-mail. This of course maybe enough for you, just to know which country the e-mail came from of course. The most important thing to remember is that these websites (like the one above) can give you an indication or confirmation of the source of an e-mail but don't rely on the information 100%.

Runtime Error when starting Photoshop Elements

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 06 Oktober 2011 0 komentar
Problem
I had installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC. It was working fine for a few hours and then when I started it, I clicked the Edit button to start the editor and it displayed the following error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files (x...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications' support team for more information.

Solution
  1. Browse to: C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Locale\en_us
  2. Rename: MediaDatabase.db3 to MediaDatabase.old
  3. Start Photoshop Elements, it should work now. Be patient the first time you start it though, it is a bit slow starting the first time.

NOTE:
If you can't see the folder C:\Program Data it is because by default Windows Explorer is set not to show hidden files/folders. To change this, in Windows Explorer click Organize | Folder and Search Options | View
Make sure Show hidden files, folders and drives is selected - see the screen shot opposite.

Backup your data!

Posted by Unknown Senin, 03 Oktober 2011 0 komentar
Introduction
For anyone who has suffered a hard drive crash you will know the worth of having a backup of your data files. Application software like MS Office can be reinstalled but your precious holiday snaps or your dearest musings are priceless to you. You need to keep your files safe - you need to backup!

Backing up is a Pain!
Backing up really is a pain. You have to remember to do it and the hard drive crash or other disaster comes always at that time just before you were going to do another backup. It's a chore and let's face it, we're all a bit lazy and complacent when it comes to backing up.

Windows XP and Windows 7 Professional have nice backup programs, there are also many others available. But these traditional programs need to run at a scheduled time. That means your backup is like a moment in time. If a day after you last backed up your computer crashes, you've lost a day's worth of files! Also, what do you backup to? DVD? How many and how long will that take? A lot and a long time!

The Solution
Wouldn't it be good if the computer would backup the data for you, without you have to do anything much? My advice is to purchase an external USB hard disk drive that comes with 'on-the-fly' backup software. In other words, a drive that backs up files automatically as you use your computer.

A few months ago (during 2011) I bought a Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1TB. It's a very small portable hard disk. It supports USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. This drive comes with WD SmartWare software, install it onto your Windows computer and it'll run in the background. When a file is saved or created, it is backed up automatically to your external drive. If you accidentally delete a file from your C: drive, you can still restore it from your backup because WD SmartWare stores multiple versions of files.

My Requirements
Everyone has their own requirements for purchasing any product, this is no different. But I thought I'd explain my reasons for getting this particular model, the My Passport Essential SE. I wanted 1TB of space. I wanted USB 3.0 so it would be very fast. I attached the drive to my desktop computer - you may wonder why I wanted a portable drive as it's more expensive than a desktop hard drive. The reason is that I don't have to plug it into the power, it's powered directly from the computer's USB port. It's small, it takes up very little physical space. As I said, these are personal reasons, you may have different requirements, I thought I'd share mine in case it helps you decide on what's best for you.

Conclusion
My computer's hard disk had a problem recently and I had to reinstall the whole computer. I restored my files from my My Passport Essential SE, it worked like a charm. This is the ultimate test, to restore the data, WD SmartWare worked for me. I'm sure other manufacturer's similar solutions also work well. My most important advice here is to backup and to get an external drive like the My Passport Essential. I think it's worth the cost, it's like an insurance policy and I can tell you from my experience that it works.

WiNToBootic - write an ISO to a USB flash drive

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 17 September 2011 0 komentar
If you want to write a Windows PE bootable ISO image to a USB flash drive, the usual way using Microsoft tools means that you must do it from a Windows Vista or higher computer. You also have to use DISKPART which is never much fun. For a long time I've hoped someone would make an easy to use utility to do this, a utility that would run from Windows XP even! I found one recently, it is WiNToBootic. It's a very small single exe file, very simple to use, it works perfectly.

HTC Sense Facebook profile photos do not sync!

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 15 Juli 2011 0 komentar

I have an HTC Hero with Android 2.1 but I think this affects just about any HTC Sense phone. The Facebook details from my contacts such as birthday and their status synchronised normally. However, the profile photos from Facebook refused to sync! It was very annoying, I tried a million different things until I was reading through the following page:
...and a very helpful bloke called Hardeep Singh suggest something! I tried it and it worked!

Solution
Login to Facebook on your PC
Click Account | Account Settings
Next to Account Security click Change
If Secure Browsing (https) is enabled then that's your problem... disable it (turn it off).
Click the Save button
Power off/on your phone
Force it to sync - Menu | Settings | Accounts & Sync | Sync All
Go into your contacts list (People) and you should see the profile photos come in (slowly).

Many thanks to Hardeep Singh!

Security?
The only problem with this solution is that you reduce your security while using Facebook. Instead of connecting with HTTPS you are only connecting with HTTP. Well, what is the risk that someone would hack your connection to Facebook? Maybe some Facebook apps would do worse to you? Of course there is a work around, after updating your phone, turn the secure browsing (https) in Facebook back on. Then periodically switch it off and re-sync from your phone. It's a pain though... let's hope that one day HTC will update their Facebook for HTC Sense app.

ROM Upgrade for the HTC Hero

Posted by Unknown Senin, 04 Juli 2011 0 komentar
For ages I was trying to upgrade my HTC Hero to the next ROM version of Android. I ran the RUU:
_HTC Hero_RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
Each time I ran it I got an ERROR 170 or 171 USB connection error. On the Hero the screen would go white with the boot loader for the RUU and then the Hero would turn off and restart. I'd hear the USB beep as if it was disconnected.

It was driving me mad until I read some forum messages about having the Hero in that boot loader mode (white screen with the three androids at the bottom) before running the RUU. Here's what to do:

Turn off the Hero.
Remove the SD card.
Press the volume down button, keep it pressed, and press the Power button.
Run the RUU installation.

When you've finished, turn off, put the SD card back in. That's it! Good luck!

Save SMS texts to Gmail from your Android phone

I had a lot of very important SMS messages and I wanted to save them - but how? I have an HTC Hero with Android, I went to the Market and downloaded SMS Backup by Christoph Studer. It uploads your SMS messages 100 at a time (you can change this if you want). They appear in your Gmail with the label SMS. It works very well. The other nice feature is that it can automatically upload your SMS texts to Gmail as you go!

NetWare: Problems designating a Replica as Master?

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 16 Februari 2011 0 komentar
Introduction
When working with NDS/eDirectory Replicas (NetWare 6.x) you need to have one that is the Master Replica. This is a flag but it's an important flag because it ensures at least one replica has the control, that if the synchronisation process is in doubt, it will use the objects/properties from the Master Replica.

Usually
Sometimes when you are upgrading or migrating to new hardware you may need to change the Master Replica to one on another server. Usually you can do this easily with DSREPAIR | Advanced options menu | Replica and partition operations | Designate this server as the new master replica server.

However...
I have found that sometimes this is not enough. After using DSREPAIR (as above) it appears as if the server's replica is the Master. But look on the other server, the one that used to be the Master. It is possible that it has not changed to Read/Write. In fact the designation of the new server to Master has not happened! It just didn't work. If you don't notice this you can get yourself into some more problems later - I am speaking from experience!

Solution
Instead of using DSREPAIR to change the Master flag, use ConsoleOne. You can run ConsoleOne on the server console - here's what to do:

Go to the server
Press Ctrl-Esc, 1-System Console
STARTX [Enter]
Click ConsoleOne (on the Novell menu)
Click View | Partition and Replica View
Click on the server object you want to set as Master
Right click and click Master
Wait... also you may need to close ConsoleOne and reopen it before it reappears correctly on the screen set to Master.

Conclusion
This is by no means the solution to all such situations. Of course you need to ensure your replicas are sychronised properly and use DSREPAIR to ensure there are no errors before you start. The best advice is to always check that an operation such as changing the Master designation, has actually worked. Even if it appears to have worked, look at it from a different angle or using a different tool (such as ConsoleOne or DSREPAIR on another server). Be sure you understand what is happening before you continue. Take your time and you should be fine - although that is good advice for everything to do with computers! ;-)

FreeNAS - first time setup

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 08 Februari 2011 0 komentar
Introduction
NAS means Network Attached Storage. It's an easy way to quickly add disk space to a network, without the need for installing a complicated, expensive server with a network operating system. Typically in the shops you can easily buy a NAS, a hard disk in a box that can be plugged into your network. It's like a simple self-contianed server.

FreeNAs is a free operating system that comes pre-configured with file sharing features. You can install FreeNAS on nearly any PC. Typically, if you have an older computer you no longer use, you could install FreeNAs on it, this is because FreeNAS doesn't need a high-spec computer. For more information on the specifications that FreeNAS can support visit the website http://www.freenas.org/

As an example I'm going to take you step-by-step through installing and configuring FreeNAS. We'll assume
this is a typical home network and the computer I'll use is an old IBM ThinkPad T42 with a 40GB hard disk
and 512MB RAM. At the time of writing FreeNAS 7 was the latest version, that's what I'll be using in this guide but the principals should be the same for later versions of FreeNAS too.

Download
Download the latest ISO image from www.freenas.org. An ISO image is a single file that can be written to a CD to make a bootable CD to install FreeNAS. On the FreeNAS website there are two types of file you can download, either X86 or AMD64. For most computers, including the computer I have, the X86 image is the one to get.

Once you've downloaded it, insert a new CD-R 700MB disc. Burn the ISO to the disc, use your CD writing software to do this (CD Burner XP is excellent and free). Write "FreeNAS" on the CD.

Planning and Requirements
Before you install FreeNAS you should plan how you want to install and use it. Here are some considerations:

- When you install FreeNAS all files currently on the target computer will be destroyed. Before you begin, backup/copy any files from your target (old) computer to somewhere safe.

- The target computer cannot use WiFi to connect to your network (at least not initially). You will need a
working RJ-45 UTP LAN cable.

- You may need a USB flash drive, if it has any data on it, back it up first.

Why would a USB flash drive be useful? This is where FreeNAS is clever and where the planning comes in. It is possible to install the FreeNAS system files to a USB flash drive (even a small 256MB one!). The idea
of this is that you keep the operating system (system files) separate from the data. Your data could be stored exclusively on the hard disk drive of the computer. The advantage of this is that it is very easy to upgrade FreeNAS without endangering your data files. It makes upgrading your storage easy too. Let's say you start with a 40GB disk but later you want more space, you can add the extra space or easily replace it without having to worry about reinstalling the operating system (FreeNAS)!

It is also possible to install FreeNAS onto the hard disk or even run it from CD. My feeling is that installing to a USB flash drive is the most flexible approach and probably the most popular so that's what I'll focus on in this guide.

Installation
Insert the FreeNAS CD you created into your target computer.

Restart the computer, it should boot from the CD (if it doesn't, you'll have to enter the BIOS setup and change the boot order).

You'll see the 'Console setup' menu

Select 9 - Install/upgrade to hard drive/flash device, etc.

Insert a USB flash drive - FreeNAS will detect and mount it.

'FeeNAS installation' - select OK

'Choose installation media' - select acd0 (your CD/DVD drive) and OK

'Choose destination media'

ad0 38155MB (this is usually the hard disk, your MB size will vary)
da0 1828MB (this is your USB flash drive, the MB size will vary)

Select da0 (the USB flash drive) and OK

FreeNAS has been installed.
You can now remove the CDROM and reboot the PC.
Press Enter to continue.

Press Enter (as it says on screen)

Remove the CD (leave the USB flash drive plugged in).

'Install & Upgrade' - select Exit

Select Reboot

It will boot from the USB flash drive for the first time. If it does not, check in the computers BIOS setup that the USB flash drive is the first in the boot order.

Plug-in the RJ-45 LAN cable (if it's not already plugged in)

'Console setup' - select 2 - Set LAN IP address

'Do you want to use DHCP for this interface?' - select No (you could select yes if you wish but it's best to set a static IP address for your FreeNAS computer)

'Enter new LAN IPv4 address' - enter the IP address you want for your FreeNAS computer. For example, it should be on the same sub-net and with a unique IP address. If you are on a home network, this is what you can do to decide which IP address to use:

a) Go to your Windows PC
b) Click Start | Run
c) Type CMD [Enter]
d) Type IPCONFIG /all [Enter]
e) Where it says 'IP address' it'll read something like 192.168.0.18, that's the address of your Windows PC. The address you should enter for the FreeNAS should be the same but the last number should be different, like .250. For example, on your FreeNAS computer enter 192.168.0.250

'Enter new LAN subnet mask' - the default is 24, this should be correct in most cases, select OK

'Enter IPv4 default gateway' - enter your default gateway, typically your Router, the same IP address as before but ending in .1. Take a look on your Windows PC, the default gateway is listed on the IPCONFIG
information. In our example I will enter 192.168.0.1

'Enter DNS IPv4 address' - again you can find this in the IPCONFIG information from your Windows PC. Often this is the same as your default gateway. In my example my DNS address is 192.168.0.1

'Do you want to configure IPv6 for this interface?' - select No

Press Enter

The FreeNAS computer is ready!

Configure and Share
Go to your Windows PC

Start your browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc)

Enter the IP address of your FreeNAS (the 'LAN IPv4 address' you entered earlier)

Conclusion
The instructions above are just to set up a simple FreeNAS for sharing files on your LAN. However, I do hope this introduction to FreeNAS has been helpful. As you've probably seen, there are many options, many
ways you can configure your FreeNAS system, you can add users and control what access they have to
different files. FreeNAS is an excellent way to use an old computer you have or maybe to make a robust
file sharing server without having to buy expensive hardware.
